MEDIA ADVISORY: MU to Host 2013 Missouri Technology Expo to Help Further Missouri’s Economy

WHAT: The latest, most innovative technologies available for licensing from the University of Missouri System will be showcased at the 2013 Missouri Technology Expo, an all-day event on Thursday, Sept. 19, at the University of Missouri. The event is designed to establish connections between university researchers and entrepreneurs, investors and business development professionals from throughout the state and nation who are interested in commercializing new technologies.

“Our goal is to provide a conduit between potential investors in high tech/high growth ventures, entrepreneurs and ground breaking innovations – the raw material of these ventures,” said Chris Fender, director of the MU Office of Technology Management and Industry Relations.

The featured technologies will be based from three research areas: engineering, life sciences and health sciences.

• New engineering technology pitches will include ideas on hydrogen biofuel production, efficient data mining, fuel conversion and modified energy output.
• Life sciences breakthroughs include ideas in crop yield prediction, parasitical crop resistance, genetically engineered pigs that are resistant to certain viruses, a smartphone application to detect heat stress in livestock, and fertility treatments for livestock and humans.
• New ideas for health sciences include a new treatment for Type I diabetes, preventative cancer screening, new anti-cancer therapy, aerosolized wound care dressing and a stent retrieval device.

WHO: Featured speakers include:

• Han Chen, managing director at Kapyon Ventures, LLC. Chen has managed numerous partnerships with institutes around the world under the Kapyon technology incubation model, yielding three spin-out companies.
• Jeremy Paben, vice president of engineering at EyeVerify. Paben is a startup founder for the eye print verification system, a new biometric technology for the mobile market. This technology was piloted at the MU Health System.
• Karl Kochendorfer, chief executive officer for MedSocket. Kochendorfer founded a business that provides a patented clinical decision support system that improves healthcare decisions and patient outcomes.
