MEDIA ADVISORY: “One Mizzou” Initiative Hosts Week of Diversity Programming at MU

WHAT: The University of Missouri student-led initiative “One Mizzou” is hosting a series of events intended to encourage a more inclusive campus community as part of its first “One Mizzou Week.” Activities are meant to challenge MU students, faculty and staff to recognize and incorporate diverse voices and perspectives in every aspect of campus life.

One Mizzou was launched in spring 2012 to celebrate diversity and foster a sense of community among MU students, faculty and staff. It advocates education, programming and the exchange of dialogue facilitated by student organizations and campus resources.

WHEN & WHERE:
Monday, Nov. 12
ONE Voice, ONE Walk, ONE Mizzou Diversity Rally: Join campus leaders for a diversity rally celebrating One Mizzou and a unity photo on the steps of Jesse Hall.
6 p.m., Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center

Keynote speech by Maya Angelou: Poet laureate of the United States, Angelou also is recognized nationally as an educator, activist and civic leader.
7 p.m., Missouri Theatre

Tuesday, Nov. 13
diversiME: The Legion of Black Collegians, Hispanic American Leadership Organization and Asian American Association will host a luncheon discussion for minority students, faculty and staff to discuss how they thrive at a predominately white institution.
11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m., Women’s Center, G108 MU Student Center

The Festival of Lights: Celebrate Diwali with the Multicultural Center and South Asian Student Association. Get a henna tattoo while enjoying South Asian-inspired food.
5-6 p.m., Stotler Lounge, North Memorial Student Union

The Peculiar Kind: A Doc: “The Peculiar Kind” is a web series and a movement to build awareness and expose the world to a subculture that is often misunderstood. A Q&A with the directors will be held after the screening.
7-9 p.m., Chamber Auditorium, 2501 MU Student Center

Wednesday, Nov. 14
OUTreach Panel: A panel of LGBTQ and Ally students will share personal stories of “coming out.” Bring open minds and questions. Lunch provided for the first 25.
12-1 p.m., MU LGBTQ Center, G225 MU Student Center

STARS Speaks: “NO!: Confronting Sexual Assault in Our Community”: A viewing and discussion of parts of “NO!”, a documentary that uses dance, poetry and survivor testimonials to discuss sexual violence in the African American community.
5:15 p.m., Jesse Wrench Auditorium, S107 Memorial Union

One Mizzou Movie: “Crash”: Los Angeles citizens with vastly separate lives collide in interweaving stories of race, loss and redemption. Admission is free.
8 p.m., Wrench Auditorium, South Memorial Student Union

Thursday, Nov. 15
“InsideOUT: One Mizzou”: On this week’s episode of MU LGBTQ’s weekly radio show, student leaders from the One Mizzou Task Force discuss in detail: One Mizzou: It’s You.
3-4 p.m., 88.1 FM, Live streamed at kcou.fm

Mr. Zou: Patrick Randolph & Carlos Martinez-Villar will lead a presentation and conversation about masculinity. Food provided for the first 25.
6-7 p.m., Women’s Center, G108 MU Student Center

Third Thursday: The MSA/GPC Black Programing Committee will present Third Thursday for November. Enjoy an evening of music, food and culture.

Mizzou Unity Coalition Inclusivity Education Program: Student advocacy group Mizzou Unity Coalition will host a presentation to educate the MU community about Person First Language and inclusivity. Food provided for the first 25.

Friday, Nov. 16
“Miss Representation” Screening: Stop by throughout the day to view “Miss Representation,” a film that exposes how mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in the U.S. Movie snacks provided.
9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Women’s Center, G108 MU Student Center

FUN.: Musical group FUN will perform. Tickets are no longer available.
