WHAT: Science Café Columbia continues its mission to inspire informal, relaxed conversations about popular science topics. For this month’s topic “Outbreak,” Carolyn Orbann, assistant teaching professor of health sciences in the School of Health Professions at MU, will discuss how anthropologists, scientists who specialize in understanding human culture, participate in forming our understanding of how and why infectious diseases spread and what can be done to interrupt epidemics after they start. She will address the most recent Ebola epidemic in West Africa and the current measles epidemic in the U.S.

An offshoot of an international movement started by PBS’ “NOVA,” Science Café is a grassroots forum that takes place in a neighborhood coffeehouse, library or bar. Meant to include members of the community who may not normally get involved in the science conversation, the Bond Life Sciences Center sponsors Science Café Columbia as a means of nurturing a two-way conversation between scientists and the public.

WHERE: Broadway Brewery, 816 E. Broadway, Columbia

WHEN: 6 p.m., Monday, March 9

NOTE: This event is free and open to the public. For more information about Science Café, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/ScienceCafeColumbia.
