MEDIA ADVISORY: MU’s “Cosmic Conversations” Finishes Semester with Discussion of High-Tech “Imaging” for Engineers

WHAT: The last “Cosmic Conversations,” of the spring semester will focus on a method for studying structures’ microscopic details, known as neutron scattering. Matt Connolly, Physics & Astronomy graduate student in MU’s College of Arts and Science, will discuss how the technique is used to improve storage of hydrogen fuel that could someday replace gasoline. Tom Zhang, a MU mechanical engineering graduate student in the College of Engineering, will present how neutron imaging helps engineers design new cooling systems for computers.

The University of Missouri Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Science and the Central Missouri Astronomical Association host the monthly lecture series, “Cosmic Conversations.”

Lectures take place on the first Wednesday of each month. Laws Observatory, an observatory deck on the fifth floor of the physics building, is open after each lecture to view the stars.
