MEDIA ADVISORY: MU’s “Cosmic Conversations” Begins with Discussion of Creation of Elements

WHAT: The first “Cosmic Conversations” of the fall semester will focus on the Big Bang theory and how the chemical elements came into existence. In her lecture, “From the Big Bang to Life – the Origin of the Elements,” Angela Speck, professor of physics and astronomy in MU’s College of Arts and Science, will discuss how the universe developed from the Big Bang to human life as the elements formed.
The University of Missouri Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Science and the Central Missouri Astronomical Association host the monthly lecture series, “Cosmic Conversations.”
Lectures take place on the first Wednesday of each month. Laws Observatory, on the fifth floor of the physics building, is open after each lecture so that attendees may view the stars. Dates and topics for upcoming lectures include:
- Oct. 2 – “Volcanoes of the Solar System”
- Nov. 6 – “Armageddon: Meteorite and Comet Impacts!” **Kid-Friendly**
- Dec. 4 – TBD
