Pope Francis Visiting Cuba
American and British photographers highlighted the religious aspect of Pope Francis’s visit by showing him most often in religious settings or presiding over religious events, including in this photo by Reuters photographer Tony Gentile. Cuban photographers, in contrast, played up the diplomatic nature of the Pope’s visit and showed more images of him in government buildings interacting with politicians.

Cubans Reacting to Pope Francis
Some social actors during the Pope’s 2015 trip to Cuba were more likely to be depicted than others. In Cuba’s markedly hierarchical society, for example, dissidents, activists, and protesters weren’t shown at all while AP and Reuters photographed and published such images, including this one by AP photographer Ramon Espinosa, who photographed plainclothes Cuban security agents detaining protesters at one of the Pope’s public masses.
