MEDIA ADVISORY: Exploring Brown v. Board of Education and the Supreme Court Justices Who Made History

WHAT:  The University of Missouri School of Law will host the 2010 Order of the Coif Distinguished Lecturer Michael Klarman, who will lecture on ‘Why Brown v. Board was a Hard Case: The Justice’s Internal Deliberations.”

Working from confidential notes from individual justices, Klarman will discuss the internal struggle among the Supreme Court justices to reach their decision in Brown v. Board of Education.

 “Today the case seems so self-evident but it has changed American law and the lives of all Americans in surprising ways,” said Larry Dessem, dean of the MU School of Law.

WHO: Michael Klarman, 2010 Order of the Coif Distinguished Lecturer, is the Kirkland and Ellis Professor of Law at the Harvard Law School.

 “Klarman is one of the most outstanding legal scholars in the nation,” Dessem said. “His path-breaking history of the legal struggle for civil rights has won the nation’s most prestigious award in American history and the Harvard Law School’s award for outstanding teaching.”
