MEDIA ADVISORY: MU to Celebrate Veterans’ Day with Ribbon-Cutting of new Center

WHAT: University of Missouri officials will celebrate Veterans’ Day this year with several events including a ribbon-cutting of the new Veterans Center and a celebration of the Veterans History Project. All events are free and open to the public.
The Veterans Center works with veterans and service members who are current Mizzou students, faculty and staff as well as prospective students. Center officials help certify students for education benefits, work with students if they are being deployed or are returning from a tour of duty, help with access to health care and counseling services, and assist with employment searches.
WHO: Gregory Bier, associate teaching professor of management in the Trulaske College of Business, will speak at the wreath-laying event.
Speakers at the Veterans Center ribbon-cutting include:
- MU Chancellor Brady Deaton
- Missouri State Rep. Jill Schupp
- Carol Fleisher, director of the Veterans Center
- Annette Sobel, assistant to the provost for strategic opportunities and chair of the Chancellor’s Committee on Military Affairs.
WHEN & WHERE: Thursday, Nov. 11
Noon – 4 p.m. – Thank you cards for veterans. The campus community and the public are invited to write thank-you notes to veterans. All notes and cards will be delivered to veterans in the Harry S Truman VA Hospital.
12:30 – 1 p.m. – Wreath-Laying Event, under the arch of Memorial Union
1 – 2 p.m. – Reception at the MU Veterans Center, Room N-5 Memorial Union
Officials will celebrate the Veterans History Project and the opening of the new center.
1:45 p.m. Ribbon-Cutting event for the MU Veterans Center, Room N-5 Memorial Union
NOTE: The Veterans History Project was initiated by State Rep. Jill Schupp and is in collaboration with the University of Missouri, the U.S. Library of Congress, Missouri State Historical Society, American Legion and the MU Veterans Center. The Missouri Association of Court Reporters are volunteering their time to produce manuscripts and subtitles for videos of Missouri’s War Veterans. The project will document the memories of Missouri’s war veterans for future generations.
