CALENDAR ITEM: MU to Host Summit on Needs of Veterans and Military Families

WHAT:Meeting the Needs of Veterans and Military Families” is a summit for health and human services professionals to increase awareness of general and behavioral health and family support needs of veterans and military families. Presenters will focus on identifying strategies and programs to improve the deployment cycle, transition and reintegration for service members and their families.

WHO: Three international experts on health and human services for veterans and military families will speak at the summit.

Gary Bowen, the Kenan Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Social Work, has worked with all branches of military and military policy makers, researchers and practitioners to address mental health and social services issues. He currently works to increase services and support to spouses of military members and veterans in North Carolina.

Anthony Hassan, clinical associate professor and inaugural director for the Center for Research and Innovation on Veterans and Military Families at the University of Southern California School of Social Work, is a retired Air Force officer with 25 years of experience in military social work. Hassan is responsible for distributing $10 million in congressional appropriations and grants, implementing education and training programs using innovative technologies, and researching military social problems.

Elspeth Cameron Ritchie, professor of psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Services, was the director of the Proponency of Behavioral Health at the Office of the U.S. Army Surgeon General and held several leadership positions within Army Medicine. Ritchie is internationally recognized for her unique public health approach to disaster management and combat mental health issues.
