MEDIA ADVISORY: African-American Studies and Sexuality Expert to Speak at MU

WHAT: E. Patrick Johnson, a noted scholar, performer and activist specializing in African-American and LGBTQ issues and history, will be performing and speaking in two public events at the University of Missouri.
On Monday, April 25, Johnson will perform “Pouring Tea: Black Gay Men of the South Tell Their Tales.” Following the performance, Johnson will hold a question and answer session. Tuesday, April 26, Johnson will give the LGBTQ Resource Center keynote lecture as part of Campus Pride Month. The lecture is titled “In Search of Countess Vivian: Queerness and the Making of Southern History.” A reception will follow the lecture.
Johnson’s visit is sponsored by the Department of Theatre, Department of Sociology, Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, the Organizational Resource Group, the Chancellor’s Diversity Initiative, the LGBTQ Resource Center, the Center for the Arts and Humanities and the Graduate Professional Council.
WHO: E. Patrick Johnson is a professor and chair in the Department of Performance Studies and professor in the Department of African-American Studies at Northwestern University. He is also a fellow at the ESB Institute for the Study of Women and Gender in the Arts and Media at Columbia College. Johnson has performed nationally and internationally and has published widely in the area of race, gender, sexuality and performance. He has published three books, most recently, “Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South—An Oral History.”
