MEDIA ADVISORY: MU Counseling Center to Host Mental Health Week

WHAT: The University of Missouri Counseling Center will host several activities next week to bring awareness to mental illness and promote mental health in the MU community. The week will consist of various events to help students, faculty members and members of the Columbia community recognize and ease mental stress, cope with grief and maintain positive attitudes.

Some activities include workshops during which presenters will share tips on coping with grief and loss, a forum for men to discuss their mental health needs, and a chance to unwind with Frisbees and dogs on Francis Quadrangle.

WHO: Speakers for the workshops include:

  • Christy Hutton, MU Counseling Center programming and practicum coordinator
  • Renee Powers-Scott, MU Counseling Center referral coordinator
  • Noah Lelek, director of the MU Interactive Theater Troupe
  • Terry Wilson, health promotion professional at the MU Student Health Center
  • Steve Caloudas, MU Counseling Center psychological intern

Activities include:

The Men’s Forum, which will address what does it mean to be a man on the MU campus, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 26, in the Student Center atrium.

“Don’t Worry Friz-Be Happy,” a time to share Frisbee skills and dogs will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, on Carnahan Quad on the MU campus. Frisbees, provided by the MU Counseling Center, and dogs, provided by Columbia Second Chance, will be available.

The workshop, “Grief & Loss: Typical Reactions and How to Cope” will be held 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, in S16 Memorial Union on the MU campus.

“Shaping Attitudes with Image Theater,” an interactive event to raise awareness and create dialogue about the stigma of mental illness and treatment, will be held from 6 to 7:45 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, in Rollins Hall, Room 1010 A&B on the MU campus.
