MEDIA ADVISORY: Unique Geography of Missouri is Topic of MU Geography Awareness Week Presentation

WHAT: A nationally recognized storyteller will discuss Missouri’s unique geography and history as the kick-off event to Geography Awareness Week at the University of Missouri.

Larry Brown, associate professor of geography in the MU College of Arts and Science, will present “Journey of Discovery: My Neighborhood, 2011 C.E.,” as an overview of Missouri geography with a mid-Missouri emphasis. Brown will discuss Missouri’s environmental diversity, how settlements impacted Missouri culture, current geographic issues and the future of Missouri geography.

National Geography Week is promoted by the Missouri Geographical Alliance, which partners with the National Geographic Education Foundation to develop and promote opportunities, resources and materials for geography educators.  The theme for the 2011 Geography Awareness Week is “Geography: The Adventure in Your Community.”   For more information, visit the Missouri Geographical Alliance at http://mga.missouri.edu/index.html.
