CALENDAR ITEM: Inaugural Bond Distinguished Lecture to Focus on Food Security

WHAT: Food security is a multi-dimensional complex issue, including food availability and people’s access to it. Now, in MU’s inaugural Christopher S. “Kit” Bond Distinguished Lecture, a panel of experts will discuss how to achieve worldwide food security.

MU Chancellor Brady Deaton, who chairs the Board of International Food and Agricultural Development for the U.S. Agency for International Development, will make opening remarks.

The panel will be moderated by former U.S. Sen. Christopher S. “Kit” Bond. Panelists are:

Djalal promotes collaborations between the U.S. and Indonesia in trade, technology transfer and educational exchanges that contribute to greater food security in both countries. He also is a member of the governing board of the Institute for Peace and Democracy and the executive board of the Indonesian Council on World Affairs.

In addition to his service to the Danforth Plant Science Center, Beachy has held professional appointments at the Scripps Research Institute and the biology department at Washington University in St. Louis. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and is a Wolf Prize Laureate.

Funded by a $1.3 million endowment, the Bond Lecture Series provides a forum for national and international experts to discuss economics, politics, science and global security.

  • Roger Beachy, president emeritus of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center
