MEDIA ADVISORY: MU to Host Retired U.S. Ambassador for Public Affairs Lecture

WHAT: The University of Missouri Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs and the Office of the Chancellor will host the 2013 Monroe-Paine Distinguished Lecture in Public Affairs. Retired U.S. Ambassador June Carter Perry will present the lecture titled, “Where Do We Go From Here? The Role of the American Citizen in Foreign Affairs”.

WHO: June Perry was a career foreign service officer in the U.S. State Department for more than 25 years. During her career, she served as ambassador to the Republic of Sierra Leone and to the Kingdom of Lesotho. As ambassador, Perry’s extensive work experience with the Peace Corps helped her successfully re-establish the program in Sierra Leone, an achievement that helped the war-torn country progress in business and economic developments. Perry has also been the director of social and humanitarian affairs and acting deputy assistant secretary of state for international organizations during her career.

Perry has received many awards, including the Secretary of State’s Career Achievement Award in 2010, the President’s Meritorious Award for Advancing U.S. Foreign Policy in 2010, the Distinguished Alumna Award from Loyola University in 2008, and several Department of State Superior and Meritorious Awards from 1995 through 2002. Her extensive experience in public affairs has made her a popular international affairs analyst, educator and speaker. She often speaks about government policy, the challenges facing developing countries, and gender issues.

NOTE: The Monroe-Paine Distinguished Lecture in Public Affairs was established by a gift from Frederick Middlebush, the 12th president of the University of Missouri, to honor his wife’s parents. The series brings leading policy experts to MU to give public lectures, conduct research seminars, and meet with students and faculty.
