MEDIA ADVISORY: MU Celebrates Acts of Kindness Week
May 3rd, 2014
By: Diamond Dixon
WHAT: The University of Missouri’s Show Me Respect Civility Committee, led by the MU Equity office in the MU Chancellor’s Diversity Initiative, has partnered with the City of Columbia to celebrate “Acts of Kindness Week.” This new initiative aims to promote a culture of kindness at MU and throughout Columbia. The Show Me Respect Civility Committee has prepared lists of suggested thoughtful activities called “kindness boards” for students, faculty and staff encouraging them to demonstrate their support by completing all acts of kindness throughout the week. Acts on the kindness boards include opening the door for someone or having a conversation with someone new.
The week culminates with the dedication of Children’s Grove at Stephens Lake Park on Saturday, May 3. Children’s Grove serves as a visual representation of our community’s support of and dedication to addressing mental health issues in youth. This week marks the end of Gratitude Month at MU where members of the campus community wrote and distributed 5,000 thank you cards to express thanks for service and support from other members of campus community.
WHO: Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate.
