MEDIA ADVISORY: Thomas Jefferson Tombstone Marker Media Availability

WHAT: The marble slab on which Jefferson’s epitaph was inscribed has returned to the University of Missouri from the Smithsonian Institute as part of MU’s 175^th anniversary week. Media are invited to photograph this marker this afternoon.

The slab also will be available for public viewing at 6 p.m., prior to Jon Meacham’s lecture, “Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power.”

When the renovation of Jesse Hall is complete, the original epitaph, personally written by Jefferson, will be displayed in a student-designed exhibit. A replica of the marker will be mounted to Jefferson’s original obelisk tombstone in Francis Quadrangle next week.
