MEDIA ADVISORY: Thomas Jefferson Tombstone Marker Media Availability

WHAT: The marble slab on which Jefferson’s epitaph was inscribed has returned to the University of Missouri from the Smithsonian Institute as part of MU’s 175th anniversary week. Media are invited to photograph this marker this afternoon.

The slab also will be available for public viewing at 6 p.m., prior to Jon Meacham’s lecture, “Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power.”

When the renovation of Jesse Hall is complete, the original epitaph, personally written by Jefferson, will be displayed in a student-designed exhibit. A replica of the marker will be mounted to Jefferson’s original obelisk tombstone in Francis Quadrangle next week.
