MEDIA ADVISORY: Three MU Researchers to Participate in SEC Symposium on Obesity
Two will present recent research findings; one will lead session on genetic influences on weight

WHAT: The second annual SEC Symposium, “Prevention of Obesity: Overcoming a 21st Century Public Health Challenge,” takes place next week. Researchers at the SEC’s 14 member universities will take an interdisciplinary approach to obesity. Three MU researchers will participate in the event, leading sessions and presenting research results.
WHO: Nancy Brown, chief executive officer of the American Heart Association, will give the keynote address.
Frank Booth, professor in the Department of Medical Pharmacology and Physiology, will lead a session, “Genetic Influences on Weight Status.” His research focuses on skeletal muscle growth and inactivity.
Sara Gable, associate professor in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, will present “Why the Urgency? Evidence from a Longitudinal Study of America’s Children.” She also is a state extension specialist and engages in practical and scholarly activities focused on children, families, child care and childhood obesity.
Sonja Wilhelm Stanis, associate professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, will present “The Contribution of Parks for Physical Activity.” Her research examines motivations for, and benefits of, outdoor recreation.
