CALENDAR ITEM: MU Hosts 31st Annual Missouri Life Sciences Week

WHAT: The 31st annual Missouri Life Sciences Week celebrates MU’s depth and breadth of research in human and animal health, the environment, world food supply, fuels and more.
The annual science event attracts researchers, academicians, business leaders and policymakers, and includes a poster session that showcases more than 300 undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral researchers and MU faculty members.
Presenters include:
- Peter Hudson, director of The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences and professor of biology at the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology, will discuss, “Just When You Thought You Were Safe… the Ecology of Emerging Diseases,” at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday April 14, in Monsanto Auditorium in the Bond Life Sciences Center.
- John Coffin, special adviser to the director of the Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute (HIV Drug Resistance Program) and professor of molecular biology and microbiology at Tufts University, will present, “Why Can’t We Cure HIV Infection?” 10 a.m., Thursday, April 16, in Monsanto Auditorium in the Bond Life Sciences Center.
- Xuemin “Sam” Wang, E. Desmond Lee and Family Fund Endowed Professor of biology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and principal investigator at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, will deliver the Charles W. Gehrke Distinguished Lecture, “Lipids as Molecular Switches in Plant Stress Signaling and Metabolic Integration,” at 1 p.m., Friday, April 17, in Monsanto Auditorium in the Bond Life Sciences Center.
The Alternative Career Exploration in Science (ACES) organization, the graduate student group focused on providing career development services for graduate and post-doctoral students in the life sciences, will host a panel discussion, “Jack of All Trades, PhD (or Master) of One.” Featured panelists include Kathy McFarland, former director and vice president of Abbott Laboratories; David Isenhour of Dow AgroSciences; and Brian Echard of Power Motion, who will speak about non-academic careers for scientists. The discussion will occur at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 14, in Monsanto Auditorium in the Bond Life Sciences Center.
Additionally, in collaboration with Missouri Life Sciences Week, the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and The Center for Watershed Management and Water Resources will present the inaugural symposium, “Water for Agriculture: Challenges for this Century,” 12 – 6 p.m., Thursday, April 16, in Monsanto Auditorium in the Bond Life Sciences Center.
