MEDIA ADVISORY: MU Corps of Discovery Lecturer to Discuss Role of African Traditional Medicine in Treating HIV, other Human Diseases

WHAT:  University of Missouri Professor of Biochemistry and Public Health, William Folk, will present the 21st Century Corps of Discovery Lecture.

Folk has dedicated much of his research to examining botanicals used to treat infectious diseases, such as HIV and other health problems. Describing his research in Africa, he will discuss the scientific and cultural conflicts between traditional and Western medical practices. Folk’s work has fostered relations between MU and colleagues in Africa, Asia and the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis.

Each year, the 21st Century Corps of Discovery Lecture commemorates the contributions of the Lewis and Clark expedition by featuring an outstanding MU faculty member and discoverer.

WHO:  William Folk, professor of biochemistry in the School of Medicine and the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at MU. Folk also is an adjunct professor of public health in the MU Master of Public Health program.
