MEDIA ADVISORY: MU to Host Lecture Series on African-American Experience in Missouri

WHAT: The University of Missouri, in collaboration with the State Historical Society of Missouri, will host the African American Experience in Missouri Lecture Series featuring Martha S. Jones. Jones will present “#SayHerName: Black Women and State Violence in the Case of Missouri v. Celia, A Slave.”

In her lecture, Jones will share the story of a slave named Celia who was purchased by a local man in Callaway County, Missouri, before she stood up for her basic human rights. Following the lecture, there will be a book signing.

WHO: Jones is the Arthur F. Thurnau professor of history at the University of Michigan and the co-director of the Michigan Law Program in Race, Law & History. She is the author of “All bound Up Together: The Woman Question in African-American Public Culture, 1830-1900.”

In addition, Jones is the co-director the Celia Project, a project that generates new research on the history of sexual violence, women and slavery in the United States.

NOTE: The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will precede the lecture at 6 p.m. in the Jesse Hall Rotunda. Dr. Jones will be available for media interviews prior to the lecture.
