MEDIA ADVISORY: Interactive Lecture on Race, Role of Social Identity in College Success to be Held at University of Missouri

WHAT:  Terrell Strayhorn, professor and director of the Center for Higher Education Enterprise at the Ohio State University, will present, “Real Talk About Race and Racism in College” at the University of Missouri.

Presented by the Margaret Mangel Lectureship Series and the MU School of Social Work in the College of Human Environmental Sciences, the interactive lecture will challenge participants to think critically about the role of social identities in society in general and specifically, in the success of college students. During the talk participants will examine their personal and collective feelings about recent national incidents; engage in a discussion about the role of social identities and structures of power and oppression in social interactions and in college student success; and learn strategies for engaging in difficult conversations on sensitive topics such as, race and racism in academy.

WHO:  Strayhorn’s research focuses on major policy issues in education including, student access and achievement, equity and diversity and student learning and development. He is an acclaimed higher education research, policy analyst and public speaker. Strayhorn has authored eight books, 50 book chapters and more than 100 refereed journal articles, reviews and scientific reports. He has authored more than 300 international, national and state conference papers, presentations and keynote addresses including his popular TEDx talk.

Strayhorn has been named “one of the most highly visible new scholars in his field” by the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education and Diverse Issues in Higher Education named him one of the nation’s Top 12 Diversity Scholars.
