MEDIA ADVISORY: MU Department of Student Life, Safe Mizzou Coalition Host “Safe Mizzou 2016”

WHAT: In an effort to make students and employees at the University of Missouri more aware of safety tools available to them, MU is hosting Safe Mizzou 2016 on Sept. 12-22. Safe Mizzou is a week of events designed to share information so MU students, faculty and staff can live, learn, work and play in a safe environment.

Events that will take place during Safe Mizzou 2016 include:

  • Citizens Response to Active Threat Training, a comprehensive course to help prepare students for active shooter/violent intruder incidents that could occur in the workplace, school or public setting. Participants will learn how to best react and respond to violent intruders.

       3:30 p.m.-5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 12, Jesse Auditorium

       6 p.m.-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13, South 016 Memorial Student Union

  • Personal Safety Fair, learn how to check on a friend in need, practice online safety and fill an emergency “go bag” with free giveaways. Free pizza and shirts while supplies last. 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13, Kuhlman Court (Rain Site: 1st Floor of the MU Student Center)
  • Annual Fire Factor and Room Burn/Pedestrian and Vehicle Education (PAVE), an opportunity to enjoy fire safety events such as fire extinguisher training and an obstacle course. At 11:50 a.m., Columbia firefighters will conduct a simulated room burn to demonstrate the speed and ferocity of fire. Free pizza, drinks and T-shirts will be available while supplies last. 11:50 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 14, 9th Street/Lowry Mall and Speaker’s Circle

Monday, Sept. 12

STOP for the Signs

10:50 a.m. – 1 p.m., Various Locations

Different colored stop signs will be placed at various campus locations and have information on what individuals need to do during specific emergency and personal safety situations

Citizen’s Response to Active Threat Training

3:30 p.m. – 5 p.m., Jesse Auditorium

This course takes a comprehensive approach to dealing with active shooter/violent intruder incidents that could occur in the workplace, school or public settings. Participants will learn how to react and respond to violent intruders by taking an active role in their own survival.

Tuesday, Sept. 13

Personal Safety Fair

10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Kulhman Court (Rain Site: 1st Floor of the MU Student Center)

Free Safe Mizzou Week Film: Concussion

8 p.m., Wrench Auditorium – Memorial Union South

In Pittsburgh, accomplished pathologist Bennet Omalu uncovers the truth about brain damage in football players who suffer repeated concussions in the course of normal play. Sponsored by the MSA/GPC Department of Student Activities.

Wednesday, Sept. 14

Delta Gamma Lectureship in Values and Ethics: An Evening with Dr. Bennet Omalu

7:30 p.m., Jesse Hall

Welcome world-renowned NigerianAmerican physician, forensic pathologist, and neuropathologist Bennet Omalu to Mizzou. Omalu is best known for discovering and publishing findings of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) by examining American football players. Tickets are free for students and are available at the MSA/ GPC Box Office in the MU Student Center or Ticketmaster.com

Thursday, Sept. 15

Pizza with Police

10 p.m – 1 a.m., 9th Street in front of RJI

MUPD will educate students about alcohol laws, alcohol overdoses and responsible consumption. This is not an alcohol enforcement activity. Free Shakespeare’s pizza will be provided!

Sunday, Sept.18

Green Dot National Day of Action

12 p.m. – 6 p.m., Location Announced Upon Registration

Do you want to take an active role in preventing power-based personal violence at Mizzou? Then come join us for Connecting the Dots: National Green Dot Day of Action. On this day, universities and colleges from across the country will be working to empower students, faculty and staff with the skills and knowledge to take action. Registration can be found at rsvp.missouri.edu. What’s your Green Dot?!

East Campus Block Party

4 p.m. – 6 p.m., East Campus Neighborhood

Do you know your neighbors in East Campus? Join them and other students for an evening of fun and games during our annual East Campus Block Party! Interact with members of the Columbia Police Department, Fire Department & Office of Neighborhood Services. Gifts, prizes, and free food will be distributed. Co-Sponsored by: Lee Street Deli

Thursday, Sept. 22

An Evening with Dr. Lori Hart

7 p.m., Jesse Auditorium

Lori Hart is a speaker, trainer and advocate for Student Leaders. Hart is an avid participant in the fraternity/sorority community and  has served as an active volunteer for Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity in several roles, including the Director of Prevention Education for Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.
