MEDIA ADVISORY: MU Confucius Institute to Celebrate 5th Anniversary

WHAT: The University of Missouri Confucius Institute will celebrate its fifth anniversary during Confucius Week, Sept. 22-27.

The Confucius Institute is a non-profit educational organization funded by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The institute offers services such as training Chinese language instructors, promoting business relationships between the U.S. and China, and providing information and consulting services regarding China’s culture, economy and trade.

The week will feature forums and events, including:

China Forum
3:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 22
Stotler Lounge, Memorial Union
Designed to deepen an understanding of traditional Chinese culture and the ties between China’s history and its present, the China Forum will feature presentations by Jianfei Lu of Shanghai Normal University and Michael Volz, assistant teaching professor of Chinese at MU. Lu will present, “The Origin of HE (harmony) Spirit and Its Impact on People’s Life in China.” Volz will present, “Nurturing Chinese and American Mutual Understanding.” Both presentations are designed to help facilitate positive cross-cultural interactions through the understanding of cultural differences.

Chinese Arts Performance
3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 25
Jesse Hall
A traditional program of martial arts, folk dance & music, classical dance and unique traditional instruments will celebrate the partnership between MU and Shanghai Normal University.
