MEDIA ADVISORY: Mizzou Hosts Summer Leadership Academy to Inspire Future Leaders

WHAT:
The Truman Youth Leadership Academy, a one-week summer day camp for middle-school age students, will take place this summer. Facilitated by the Truman School of Public Affairs and the Institute of Public Policy at the University of Missouri, the program aims to teach leadership skills, civic involvement and community service in the hopes of inspiring local youth to become today’s community leaders and tomorrow’s world leaders.

Students will establish foundational concepts based on familiar experiences in their own lives before expanding to national and global concepts. Topics such as positive body image, healthy friendships, volunteering, diversity and inclusion will be covered.

This is the fourth year of the Academy and up to 40 middle-school students selected on a first come, first served basis will be able to attend. Activities include a community service project and a visit to the Capitol and the Supreme Court of Missouri.

WHO:
Participants include youth entering the sixth, seventh or eighth grades.

WHEN:
9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Monday, July 10- Friday, July 14       

Highlights include:

  • A group visit to the Missouri State Historical Society at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 11.
  • Campers will take on roles of the Truman Cabinet and work their way through a problem at the MU Student Center, 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 12.
  • A Columbia City Hall simulation at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 13.
  • A tour of the Missouri Capitol and the Missouri Supreme Court in Jefferson City on Friday, July 14.

WHERE:
MU campus, Columbia City Hall, Flat Branch Park and the Missouri State Capitol.
