MEDIA ADVISORY: MU Welcomes Incoming Students with Pizza Party, Midnight Barbecue, Tiger Walk

WHAT: University of Missouri officials will welcome new students with several Fall Welcome events, including Paint the M, a campus-wide pizza party and the traditional Tiger Walk. The activities will begin Wednesday, Aug. 16.

WHO: New MU students

WHEN & WHERE:

Wednesday, Aug. 16
Residence Hall Move-In
9 a.m. – 10 p.m.
Wednesday marks the official opening day when students can move in. Some students, such as those in Freshman Interest Groups, may have already moved in. For media wishing to cover the Move-In, please contact the MU News Bureau at (573) 882-6211.

Midnight BBQ
10 p.m. – 1 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 17
MU Student Center

Campus Picnic and Spirit Rally
6 – 7 p.m.
MizzouRec Complex

Friday, Aug. 18 
Paint the M

7 p.m.
Faurot Field
New students will paint the “M” on the north side of Faurot Field, taking part in a Mizzou tradition that dates back to 1927.

Fall Welcome Resource Fair
11 a.m.
MU Student Center
Dozens of campus organizations will show students the best of college life at Mizzou and resources available on campus.

Saturday, Aug. 19
Step Forward Day
7:45 a.m. – noon
Tiger Plaza
During Step Forward Day, new students will have opportunities to sign up to volunteer at local service agencies and participate in service projects throughout the Columbia community. Participants will receive a free T-shirt and complimentary breakfast.

Saturday Morning Science: Doing Science in the Dark
10:30 a.m. – noon
Monsanto Auditorium, Bond Life Sciences Center
Angela Speck, professor of astrophysics and director of astronomy in the MU Department of Physics and Astronomy, will discuss the upcoming eclipse and the experiments students and researchers can do during this once-in-a-generation event.

Sunday, Aug. 20
Campus Pizza Party

4 p.m.
Shakespeare’s Pizza, 225 S. Ninth Street
Students can stop by Shakespeare’s Pizza, a traditional Columbia favorite, and enjoy free food, beverages, music and more.

Transfer Student Reception
5 ­– 6 p.m.
2206 MU Student Center
This reception offer attendees a chance for new transfer students to get together, meet other transfer students and learn about opportunities on campus.

Tiger Walk
6 – 7 p.m.
Francis Quadrangle
Incoming students will walk through the Columns toward Jesse Hall to symbolically mark their entrance into Mizzou. The public is invited to attend.

Marching Mizzou Concert on the Quad
7 p.m.
Francis Quadrangle
After Tiger Walk, members of Marching Mizzou will perform select pieces from their repertoire.
The public is invited to attend.

Monday, Aug. 21
First Day of Class

Mizzou Eclipse Watch Event
 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.
Carnahan Quadrangle
Students, staff and faculty are invited to an eclipse watch party sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor, MSA/GPC Student Activities and the Department of Student Life.
