Media Advisory: MU Celebrates Veterans Week

WHAT:          In recognition of Veterans Day and in honor of those who have served in the military, the University of Missouri will host several activities during Veterans Week. Highlights include a parade hosted by the Mizzou Joint Air Force ROTC, a panel with student veterans, the annual wreath laying ceremony and a military appreciation football game.

WHEN &

WHERE:        Nov. 2-10, various campus and downtown locations, see attached schedule for specific event times and locations.

WHO:             All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Friday, Nov. 2
Mizzou Joint ROTC Veterans Day Vigil
11:11 a.m.
Boone County Courthouse, 705 E. Walnut St.

Cadets and midshipmen from the ROTC units at Mizzou will form a detail and hold a vigil near the war memorials at the Boone County Courthouse. A detail of cadets will march every hour from Nov. 2 to Nov. 3. The vigil is coordinated by the Air Force ROTC, Detachment 440.

Saturday, Nov. 3
Mizzou Joint ROTC Annual Veterans Day Parade
10:30 a.m.
Boone County Courthouse, 705 E. Walnut St.

The annual MU Veterans Day parade hosted by the Air Force ROTC will begin at MU’s Columns and travel along Eighth Street to the Boone County Courthouse. Several Boone County veterans and commemorative organizations will participate. A short ceremony will be held at the Boone County Courthouse immediately following the parade.

Monday, Nov. 5
Student-Veteran Panel Discussion and Lunch
11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
S203 Memorial Student Union

Student veterans will share their experiences. The event includes a packaged military meal known as a Meal Ready to Eat (MRE). The event is sponsored by the MU Veterans Center, Mizzou Student Veteran Association, Campus Activities and the Green Zone Committee.

Wednesday, Nov. 7
Concert Series: U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors
7 p.m.
Jesse Auditorium

This internationally-acclaimed group performs various selections, appropriate for all audiences in an effort to encourage support for the armed forces. Tickets are free at the Missouri Theatre box office.

NOTE: Limit four tickets per person

Thursday, Nov. 8
Mizzou Military Mementos
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Main Level, MU Student Center

The public is invited to write letters of appreciation to veterans at the Harry S Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital.

Friday, Nov. 9
Wreath Laying Ceremony
Noon
Memorial Tower, Memorial Student Union

This ceremony will recognize and honor MU veterans. The event begins with a ceremony at the Memorial Tower which includes a guest speaker and the annual laying of the wreath. Additionally, the Remembrance Day National Roll Call will occur to remember those who, as President Lincoln described, “gave their last full measure of devotion” while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The ceremony concludes with a national minute of silence at 1 p.m. to honor our fallen soldiers. A reception will follow the ceremony. The event is sponsored by the Missouri Student Unions.

“I Support Mizzou Veterans” Photo

All students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to be a part of the annual “I Support Mizzou Veterans” photo. This event is sponsored by the Missouri Students Association, the Graduate Professional Council, Campus Activities and the Mizzou Student Veterans Association.

Veteran’s Week Weekend Film: 12 Strong
7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Jesse Wrench Auditorium, Memorial Student Union South

The first U.S. Army Special Forces team in Afghanistan after 9/11 must work with a new captain and an Afghan warlord to take down the Taliban. Tickets at the door are $1 with MU student ID and $2 for others.

Mizzou Veterans Week Banquet
6:30 p.m. reception, 7 p.m. dinner
Veterans’ week comes to an end with this special dinner. RSVP is required to veterans.missouri.edu
