MEDIA ADVISORY: First Roar, Midnight BBQ and Tiger Walk among events welcoming incoming and returning MU students

WHAT:

University of Missouri officials will welcome new students with hundreds of Welcome Week events, including the traditional Paint the M, Midnight BBQ and Tiger Walk. The activities will begin Wednesday, Aug. 14.

Welcome Week includes more than 200 events, with 120 current MU students serving as Welcome Week leaders.

Wednesday, Aug. 14 

New Student Move-In 

9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

MU housing

Wednesday marks the official opening day when new students can move into the residence halls. Students and families will check in at the Hearnes Center before heading to their new homes, where about 1,000 campus and community volunteers will help students move into their rooms. Some students, such as those participating in sorority recruitment, may move in earlier. For media wishing to cover move-in, please contact the MU News Bureau at (573) 882-6211.

First Roar

9 – 10 p.m.

Mizzou Arena

New students will parade from Tiger Plaza to Mizzou Arena to learn various Mizzou traditions, hear from the Missouri Students Association President and other guests, and take a class photo.

 

Thursday, Aug. 15

MizzouRec Boot Camp

7:30 – 8:30 a.m.

Stankowski Field

Featuring strength training, cardio, core conditioning and more, students will get in their daily workout with other students in small groups while coached by MizzouRec’s nationally certified personal trainers.

Homecoming Tailgate

11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Traditions Plaza

Students will play yard games and decorate a 3D version of this year’s homecoming logo to celebrate the beginning of Homecoming season.

Midnight BBQ

10 p.m. – 1 a.m.

An epic Mizzou event, the Midnight BBQ offers news students a great place to meet new friends, relax before classes begin and enjoy BBQ and funnel cakes.

 

Friday, Aug. 16

Paint the M 

7 – 8 p.m.

Faurot Field

New students will paint the “M” on the north side of Faurot Field, taking part in a Mizzou tradition that dates back to 1927.

Welcome Week Resource Fair and Job Open House

1 – 4 p.m.

MU Student Center

Dozens of campus offices will show students the best of college life at Mizzou and resources available on campus.

 

Sunday, Aug. 18

Tiger Walk 

6 – 7 p.m.

Francis Quadrangle

Incoming students will run through the Columns toward Jesse Hall to symbolically mark their entrance into Mizzou. Immediately following Tiger Walk, members of Marching Mizzou will perform select pieces from their repertoire. The public is invited to attend.

 

Monday, Aug. 19

First Day of Class 

 

Thursday, Aug. 22

MU Veterans Center Fall Welcome BBQ

6 p.m.

Tiger Terrance

Student veterans and their families will have the opportunity to meet and socialize while eating barbecue, competing in board games and playing video games.
