January 7th, 2015
COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching announced today that the University of Missouri has been re-classified as a “Community Engaged Campus.” The university joins 240 U.S. colleges and universities that have received the 2015 Community Engagement Classification.
Community engagement describes the collaboration displayed among institutions of higher education and their local, regional, statewide, national and global communities for the exchange of knowledge and resources. The purpose of community engagement is to enrich scholarship, research and creative activity; enhance the University’s curriculum, teaching and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.
“We’re delighted to receive this recognition, which highlights and showcases the true value of our land-grant mission to the citizens of Missouri,” said MU Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin. “Mizzou students, faculty and staff participate in a wide range of outreach efforts, including partnerships with schools, communities and businesses across the state. We are proud that our researchers strive every day to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the state, the nation and the world, and that we are nationally recognized for doing so.”
