Provost appoints Stackman as MU Vice Provost for Student Affairs

Alumnus has served in leadership positions at University of Illinois, Texas A&M, Temple and Notre Dame

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Provost Latha Ramchand announced today that William Stackman, associate vice president for student services at the University of Notre Dame, has been appointed as vice provost for student affairs at MU effective July 15.

“I’m thrilled to have Dr. Stackman join the University of Missouri,” Ramchand said. “He is a strong leader with a demonstrated track record in higher education. As an MU alumnus, he is familiar with our university, and he has the expertise to provide leadership and vision in administering a comprehensive portfolio of programs.”

In his current role at Notre Dame, Stackman oversees programs such as the McDonald Center for Student Well-Being, the University Counseling Center, Graduate Student Life and University Health Services. Additionally, he chairs the university’s Care team and serves as the deputy Title IX coordinator.

“I’m honored and thrilled to return to my alma mater and serve an institution that has given me so much. When I visited campus during the search process, I was very excited by the energy and enthusiasm surrounding the Student Affairs division,” Stackman said. “To this day, Mizzou is a very special place for me as I formed relationships as a student there that are still near and dear to my heart today.”

Stackman earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in parks and recreation administration from the University of Kentucky and the University of Missouri, respectively. He earned a master’s degree in education administration from West Virginia University and completed his doctorate in educational leadership: policy, planning and administration from Boston University.

Prior to his current position, Stackman served as director of student activities at Texas A&M University, dean of Student Affairs at Rhodes College, associate and acting dean of students at Oberlin College, director of Student Activities at Tufts University, associate director of the Illini Union at the University of Illinois, and associate director of Student Activities at Temple University.

At Notre Dame, Stackman made several changes to create more efficient and effective services for students, including integrating the health and wellness units, creating a Center for Student Well-Being, securing a $10 million gift to support mental health efforts and expanding Title IX programs and outreach.

“I also want to thank all of those who took the time to engage in this search process, especially our dedicated search committee that was co-chaired by Jim Spain, vice provost for undergraduate studies and eLearning, and Casandra Harper Morris, associate professor of educational leadership and policy analysis,” Ramchand said. “Additionally, a large thank you to Gary Ward for his tremendous work as interim vice chancellor for student affairs over the past two years. Along with his duties overseeing the Division of Operations, Gary made sure that Student Affairs was continuing to respond to students’ concerns and concerns and address areas, including affordability, that impacted students a great deal.”
