MEDIA ADVISORY: International Business, Technology and Media Leaders Convene to Find New Business Models for the News Media

WHAT: The Center for the Digital Globe (CDiG), the Alfred Friendly Foundation and the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI), will bring together international industry leaders to explore the future of news and media. The two-day event, Business, Technology and the Media: Charting a Course Through Chaos, will stimulate provocative conversation about what the future may hold for consumers, reporters and publishers and will create new business models for the media industry.

“We have put together a unique blend of journalists, entrepreneurs and futurists to help give us a better idea of how to navigate a future course through what seems to be chaos in the media industry,” said Randy Smith, Donald W. Reynolds Chair of Business Journalism. “We hope this symposium will give us new directions, insights and business models for journalism.”

WHO: More than 40 leaders in law, journalism, academics, business and technology will attend, including: 

  • Omar Khan, senior vice president of product and strategy for Samsung America
  • Beth Polish, senior vice president of Hearst Corporate Innovation 
  • Ochieng Rapuro, managing editor of Kenya’s Business Daily newspaper
  • Jim Kennedy, vice president for the Associated Press
  • Vin Capone, development executive for Apple
  • Beth Keck, senior director for Walmart
  • Jin-Yong Park, assistant editor for Hankook-Ilbo (The Korea Times)
  • Phil Auccut, managing partner for WR Holdings and president of Junit, LLC

About the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute
The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute engages media professionals, scholars and citizens in programs aimed at improving the practice and understanding of journalism. Part of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, RJI collaborates with news and technology companies, professional associations, foundations and individuals to generate and test innovative models and technologies for journalism and advertising. Six Donald W. Reynolds Fellows spend an academic year at RJI, working with Missouri faculty and students and RJI staff to develop new ways to gather, process and deliver news, information and advertising. RJI was launched in 2004 with an initial $31-million grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.
