WHAT: Each year, more than 300 of Missouri’s top rising high school juniors converge upon the University of Missouri campus to participate in the Missouri Scholars Academy. However, funding to the program has been cut drastically in recent years. Now, Missouri Scholars Academy officials have announced that Ameren will donate $20,000 to the program. Ameren officials will present the donation in a ceremony on April 18.
Participants in the three-week program take classes, live in residence halls and perform community service. The program is based on the premise that gifted youth must be provided with special opportunities for learning and personal development in order for them to realize their full potential.
The program is financially supported by sponsors, donors and participant tuition.
WHO: Speakers include:
- Ted Tarkow, director, Missouri Scholars Academy
- Holly Wipfler, customer service advisor, Ameren Missouri
WHERE: 317 Lowry Hall, MU campus
WHEN: 3 p.m., April 18
NOTE: Media are welcome to attend the donation ceremony.
