MEDIA ADVISORY: MU to Host Symposium to Remember Rwanda Genocide

WHAT:           The University of Missouri will host a symposium, “Genocide in Rwanda: Media, Memory and Denial,” to remember the victims of the Rwandan genocide.

                        The symposium begins Thursday, April 26 with a showing of  “Brussels-Kigali,” a film based on the 2009 trial in Belgium of Ephrem Nkezabera, who was convicted for his involvement in the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Other events include panels featuring Roméo Dallaire, Canadian senator; James Kimonyo, ambassador of the Republic of Rwanda to the United States; and Carl Wilkens, director of World Outside My Shoes.

                        All events are free and open to the public.

                        Roméo Dallaire, Canadian senator and humanitarian

                        James Kimonyo, ambassador of the Republic of Rwanda to the United States

                        Chantal Kalisa, associate professor of French at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

                        Jean-Pierre Karegeye, assistant professor of French and Francophone Studies at Macalester College

                        Aimable Twagilimana, professor of African American literature at The State University of New York

                        Carl Wilkens, director of World Outside My Shoes

                        Joyce Leader, visiting scholar at the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University
