WHAT: The University of Missouri faculty will host a workshop that aims to improve earthquake science curriculum. Twenty teachers from the central United States will attend. The workshop will focus on how to improve curriculum and educational materials focused on mid-continent earthquakes. This type of quake, such as the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-12, occurs within the tectonic plates that make up the Earth’s crust as opposed to quakes that occur where plates collide, such as those that affect California.
The workshop will include a field trip to New Madrid to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the 1811-1812 earthquakes.
The workshop is a collaboration between the University of Missouri Department of Geological Sciences and MU Science Education Center. The workshop is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
WHO: Reporters are invited to attend the workshop. The workshop is not open to the public.
