MEDIA ADVISORY: MU Truman School of Public Affairs to Host Monroe-Paine Lecture on Immigration

WHAT: The University of Missouri Harry S. Truman School of Public Affairs and the Center for the Study of Organizational Change will host the Monroe-Paine Distinguished Lecture in Public Affairs. The lecture, “Categories in Policy Thinking: State-Created Categories for Race-Ethnic Groups,” will feature visiting professor Dvora Yanow from Wageningen University in the Netherlands.

The lecture will focus on the conundrum created by The Netherlands’ creation and use of categories concerning new immigrants to the country. The Dutch government has argued that immigrants should make efforts to adopt Dutch social norms and values. Yanow’s lecture will compare how this immigration issue relates to American immigrants and their efforts to adapt to the U.S. culture and norms.

The Monroe-Paine Distinguished Lecture in Public Affairs was established by a gift from Frederick Middlebush, the 12th president of the University of Missouri, to honor his wife’s parents. The series brings leading policy experts to MU to give public lectures, conduct research seminars, and meet with students and faculty.
