WHAT: Graduate students at the University of Missouri Truman School of Public Affairs are hosting a five day summer camp, called the Truman Leadership Project, to engage children in civic and community service. The camp is directed at children who are entering seventh and eighth grades and will feature service projects and other community improvement activities for students. Some of the projects will include writing letters to soldiers overseas and cleaning up downtown Columbia and the MU campus.

“The camp is going to focus on the four core values here at MU: respect, responsibility, discovery and excellence,” said Megan Ogar, a graduate student in the Truman School of Public Affairs and co-director of the camp. “With these values we can teach kids the many different ways they can give back to the community.”

The camp is funded through private donations and the Institute of Public Policy in the Truman School of Public Affairs. The camp was created and will be operated by Truman School of Public Affairs graduate students Ogar, Bryce Osman and Nicole Phillips as part of an internship required for their degrees. The camp, which is in its first year, will continue as an annual summer camp.
