COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri Registrar Brenda Selman has announced a new plan to verify the U.S. citizenship, permanent resident status or lawful presence of all Mizzou students. Selman is taking this action following the passage of Missouri law HB 1549 earlier this year.

"For the vast majority of students on campus, they will not need to do anything," Selman said. "We already have enough information in our system to verify their citizenship or legal status."

Currently, university officials confirm citizenship or lawful presense by verifying:

  • a student’s W-2 form. If the student is a part-time or full-time employee of the university, they will possess a W-2 form, indicating that the U.S. Social Security Administration has confirmed their citizenship status.
  • a student's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This would indicate that the federal government has verified their citizenship status.
  • a student's Mizzou ID card. This confirms that university officials have verified that the student possessed a government issued photo ID, which is necessary to obtain the Mizzou ID card.
  • a student’s visa, identifying that the federal government has confirmed that the student is a legal alien or permanent resident.

For those students not verified with the above documents, Selman's office will notify them through email that they need to present the university with appropriate documentation. If they are unable to do this, the students will not be allowed to enroll in classes for the upcoming semester until they are able to present the appropriate documentation.

Anyone with questions regarding the new policy is encouraged to call the MU Registrar's office at 573-882-7881.
