MU Vice Provost for Advanced Studies and Dean of Graduate School Accepts Position at Ohio University

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Pamela Benoit, vice provost for advanced studies and dean of the Graduate School at the University of Missouri, has accepted the position of executive vice president and provost at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. The appointment is effective July 1, 2009.

"I am excited to become the executive vice president and provost at Ohio University because it allows me to embrace additional and new responsibilities and challenges at a remarkable public institution," Benoit said. "I am very grateful for the tremendous opportunities that I have had at the University of Missouri and the extraordinary colleagues I've worked with and learned from during my time here. I will always be proud of my association with MU."

Benoit started at MU in 1984 as an assistant professor of communications. From 2003 to 2005, she served as the assistant, associate and interim dean of the Graduate School. She was appointed to her current position on May 1, 2006. In that position, Benoit has led MU efforts in graduate and professional studies across campus. As dean, she served as administrator over recruitment, admission, advising, diversity, academic programs, development, faculty and staff communication, public relations, and strategic planning.

Benoit spearheaded the development of the Griffith's Leadership Society for Women and significantly increased participation in the Preparing Future Faculty program, a national program established by the Council of Graduate Schools, the Association of American Colleges and Universities, the Pew Charitable Trust and the National Science Foundation with a vision that includes learning about the expectations for faculty roles regarding teaching, research and service. She also designed a professional development workshop series for all graduate students and post doctoral fellows.

"Pam is a wonderful asset to the university," MU Provost Brian Foster said. "She's a big thinker and is central to discussions of many of the biggest issues on the university's agenda. We wish her the very best in this new role."

Benoit received the William T. Kemper Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching and the MU Faculty-Alumni Award. Throughout her career, Benoit has promoted doctoral education. She participated in the President's Academic Leadership Institute and served on the College of Arts and Science Strategic Development Board. In 2003, Benoit was selected to chair the MU Chairs council. She has served on the Strategic Planning and Resource Advisory Council.

Benoit received her bachelor's degree from Ball State University in 1975, her master's degree in communication from Central Michigan University in 1976, and her doctorate in communication from Wayne State University in 1979.

A search for an interim vice provost for advanced studies and dean of the graduate school will begin soon. An appointment will be made shortly.
